Adventure
Racers is a group of
racers headquartered in Tulsa, OK. We also have racers located in Wichita, KS.,
Little Rock, AR., Oklahoma City, OK. area, and Dallas, TX. area.
CGAR isn't a formal club or organization. There are no
dues. There are no requirements to be part of the group, or limits on who can join
in on the fun, except that we'd like everyone to race under some form of the
CGAR name.
We're just a bunch of people, young and old, with varying athletic backgrounds and
abilities, who love the sport of Adventure Racing. Some of us race as often as we
can, sometimes two and three times a month. Others can only manage a few times a
year. Some of us enjoy the multi-day races, while others are only interested in
sprints.
PQ 2008
Mark and Dennis decided to sign up for PQ2008 when it was announced. Stroking the keyboard late on the eve of signup got us into the race. Now, to put together the team. We focused our efforts on finding a gal. We were surprised at all the contacts and interest we had, but no commitments. Finally at the November deadline, we decided to throw in the backpack and gave up our entry.
Ironically, Dennis, the oldest GCAR member, got recruited to another team. However, that team went dysfunctional and also hung up the trek poles.
Still wanting to make a go of it, Dennis and Mark contacted Kerry who they had raced with numerous times in the past. As luck would have it, Kerry had been training with Sara and both agreed to team up. So, Team GCAR was close to complete for PQ2008.
We were also fortunate to have two other members of the team join us to complete the PQ2008 team. Kim and Jonathan will be providing support and comfort (not too much comfort). Both are exceptionally qualified, experienced, and mean-spirited enough to keep us going during the race.
One of the more exhilarating legs of the race will be the river swim down class III and IV rapids.
We’ll be riding high on the waves with riverboards from Rocky Mountain RiverBoards!
History
Team GCAR started with Sheri and Jonathan in the spring of 2001. They were doing every sprint race they could, all for a T-shirt. In the fall of 2001, they upgraded to longer day races and Dennis joined them. After a few races, there was the need of a couple of 4ths, where Mark and Greg joined in. Greg and Dennis had done a race together early in 2001 and Mark was recruited electronically via some area groups.
In the spring of 2002, race fever was ramped among the few members of the team. The sport was gaining popularity in the region and there were just too many races and not enough members to fill team requirements. A couple of us wanted to race every chance we could and realized that we could put together more than one team for any given race. We began contacting people we knew in Tulsa and Wichita.
We also were hungering to do a multi-day thing. But, we only had two female members both of who were drawing the line at one-day events. We ran into Kim at a race in early 2002 and was fortunate to get her committed to a long race.
Throughout 2002, we attracted a great group of racers. We were able to put together one or more teams for almost every race in the region. Plus, the teams have all done well at every race, bringing home the hardware and some great schwagg...
